The Green Heart of Tuscany
Cuor D’Verde
The Story of Our Grove
High upon the sun-drenched hills of San Martino a Bocena, overlooking the ancient walls of Cortona, our olive trees draw life from soil steeped in history. These stone terraces were once walked by the Etruscans (8th–3rd century BCE), the first guardians of this land, who saw the olive tree as a sacred gift an emblem of light, healing, and eternity.
Centuries later, the Romans (3rd century BCE – 5th century CE) cultivated these same slopes, pressing oil not only for their tables but for their temples and lamps, carrying the essence of this valley along the roads of empire. In the Middle Ages (11th century CE), the humble chapel of San Martino bestowed its blessing upon the farmers who, with devotion and endurance, kept the groves alive. From generation to generation, the land was not merely inherited but entrusted along with its traditions and its spirit.
In the 20th century CE, the hills of Cortona endured the hardships of war. During and after the Second World War, many groves suffered neglect or destruction. Yet in the years that followed, new olive trees were planted on these very slopes—symbols of renewal, resilience, and the Tuscan will to rebuild. Some of the trees in our grove rise from this post war planting, their roots carrying the spirit of rebirth alongside the wisdom of centuries-old companions.
